TMMC tour - May 2015
23 Escarpment Probians made the trip to Cambridge to visit The Toyota manufacturing facility where Toyota’s most popular car, the Corolla, is manufactured. The plant is unique within the Toyota group in that it is the only plant outside of Japan where a model of the Lexus range is manufactured which says a lot for the quality of the Canadian facility.
The comment most frequently heard among our members was on how clean the facility was, and not just clean but shiny clean! There were areas of the plant that we were unable to visit because of health and safety reasons and these areas were covered in a short video presentation before the tour.
Having introduced the Toyota Production System in the electronics manufacturer that I ran I was interested to see it in operation in the auto plant and found many similarities including the use of red, amber green lights at the various workstations. The major difference, other than the process and the product of course, was the TAKT time – for the Toyota Corolla it was currently was 55 seconds for our EZ Pass transponder it was 11 seconds!
Following our tour, we adjourned to the Blackshop restaurant in nearby Hespeler and enjoyed a late lunch and, not surprisingly for Escarpment Probus, a beverage or two!
For those interested in taking the tour = it is offered free both for individuals and groups, including children of 8 and over! Just call the plant and make a reservation.
Our thanks to Barb Alderson and the whole activities team for once again putting together a very enjoyable outing.
